Chesrown For Immediate Release ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES A DECADE WITH SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER EVENT February 13, 2002 – In 2002, the Asian and Pacific Islander Association at the Maricopa Community Colleges marks ten years of helping students achieve their academic goals. To help provide scholarships to students who might otherwise have a difficult time paying for college, the APIA is holding a fundraising event on Saturday, March 2, 2002, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. “We want to help students pursue lifetime opportunities of interest to them, and getting an education is fundamental to ensuring success in any endeavor,” according to APIA President, Ruth Yandell. The APIA was founded in 1992 to promote and enhance the well-being of Asian and Pacific Islander faculty, staff and students at the Maricopa Community Colleges and in the community at-large. The APIA strives to provide resources to its members and the community through mentorship, cultural enrichment programs, and educational opportunities. Each year, the APIA awards 10 to 16 scholarships to students wishing to pursue higher education at the Maricopa Community Colleges and 2 scholarships to Maricopa students who transfer to Arizona State University. The scholarship fundraising gala will be emceed by businessman and former State Representative Barry Wong. The program will feature authentic dance performances from the Philippines and India, presentations from educators and students, and a cultural fashion show. The dinner will be held at the C-Fu Gourmet Restaurant, 2051 W. Warner Road, (SW Corner of Dobson and Warner) in Chandler. Tickets are $40 per person or $400 for a table of ten.
