MUSICAL PERFORMANCE PLEASES ALL EARS!

Even though Maricopa's Best is presented annually, it is still a one a kind show and has never been nor will it ever be presented again! Maricopa's Best features the best student musicians from the Maricopa Community Colleges. A premier live telecast of the program will air over MCTV, Cox Digital Cable Channel 130 (Channel 28 or 98 in Scottsdale).

Greater Phoenix, AZ - It is the kind of musical performance that is sure to please all musical tastes and ages! The performance, Maricopa's Best, is an eclectic collection of outstanding music, a variety of musical genres using a wide range of musical instrumentals and vocal styles performed by talented musicians! This extraordinary performance is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 7:00 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Scottsdale Community College, 9000 East Chaparral.

Maricopa's Best are selected from the 11th annual Outstanding Music Performers competition of the Maricopa Community Colleges. The competition highlights the finest work by the music students in the Maricopa Community Colleges. Friday night's performance features first place winners in vocal, jazz vocal, chamber ensemble, guitar, piano, instrumental, jazz combo and composition.

Over two hundred students from nine of the ten Maricopa Community Colleges competed in the competition held earlier this month. The first place winners will be performing in the Friday night concert. The first place winners and their categories are:

  • Chamber Ensemble: Jeffery Eastman, Stacey H. Elms, Charlie Goodwin and Ryan Vance, Glendale Community College.
  • Guitar : Burton Munson and Ryan Vance, Glendale Community College.
  • Instrumental: Bobby Flanagan, Marimba, Glendale Community College.
  • Jazz Combo: Blake Allen, Stuart Brown, James Casey, Eunyoung Choi, Dan Hinze, Michael Murray and Sergio Nogales, Mesa Community College.
  • Jazz Vocal: Sean Aron, Kathleen Bowman, Michael Bradley, Jarrod Fowler, Dennis A. Hubert, Kendra L. Merritt, Whitney Mosher and Kim Wells, Glendale Community College.
  • Piano: Iwona Walerczyk, Mesa Community College.
  • Vocal: Connie Kay Jones, Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

    Friday night's performance marks the first live television event for the Maricopa Colleges Television (MCTV). MCTV is on Cox Digital Cable channel 130 throughout the valley or channel 28 or 98 in the Scottsdale area. The television station is located on the campus Scottsdale Community College. Working behind the scenes will be students from SCC's Maricopa Institute for Arts and Entertainment Technology. In addition to producing and video taping the performance, the students are creating graphics and animation.

    The music competition first place winners receive $300, second place winners $200 and third place winners receive $100. Professional musicians and music educators from the valley do the judging. The Office of Fine Arts Development, through the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI), supports the Music Competition for Teaching and Learning.
