Maricopa Institute for Learning Names Fellows for 2001-2002

Greater Phoenix, AZ - The concept for the Maricopa Community Colleges' Maricopa Institute for Learning (MIL) is modeled after the Pew Fellowship Program for Carnegie Scholars. The primary goal of the MIL Fellows Program is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. MIL Fellows follow a process of defining, implementing, documenting and disseminating a project focused on student learning. This one-year commitment provides several experiences and opportunities for the Fellows to engage in scholarly thought, reflection and dialogue about teaching and learning. The following were selected as Maricopa Institute for Learning Fellows:

  • Scott Adamson is a math instructor at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. His proposal is to enhance student understanding of mathematical concepts through innovative writing projects.
  • Debbie Anderson is the librarian at Estrella Mountain Community College. She plans to research and experiment with ways in which information and digital literacy can be infused into the classroom experience.
  • John Gibson is with Glendale Community College's Information Systems. He will use diverse learning preferences of students to customize instruction in new learning environments.
  • Sian Proctor, a geology instructor at South Mountain Community College, will use visual imagery and technology to negotiate learning in a community of learners.
  • Nancy Siefer, Glendale Community College's English instructor, and Elizabeth Skinner, a reading instructor also at Glendale, team up for a joint project called View from the Back of the Room. One of the Fellows will serve as a "master learner" in a course outside her discipline and the other as an in-depth interviewer of students, instructor, and master learner. By comparing and integrating information gained through these insider-outsider roles, Fellows will begin to define a common framework within which meaningful dialogue about learning can occur.

Also honored by nomination were Pushpa Ramakrishna and Sandra Stuebner from Chandler-Gilbert Community College; John Bradley and Barbara Herzog from Estrella Mountain Community College; Marie Fenske from GateWay Community College; Judy Christensen and Jo Steig from Mesa Community College; Jan Downey from Paradise Valley Community College; Ray Bromley from Phoenix College; Sandra Desjardins from Scottsdale Community College; and Teresa Leyba from South Mountain Community College.

Fellows were nominated by their college president, dean of instruction or faculty development coordinator and selected by a committee of their peers. Additional information about MIL is available at http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/mil/
