Galloway For Immediate Release MINTZER FINE TUNES MARICOPA'S JAZZ ORCHESTRA November 1, 2001 - Some of Maricopa's best student and faculty musicians will get the opportunity to work with tenor and soprano sax master Bob Mintzer of Yellowjackets fame. The musicians will receive one-on-one training with Mintzer in a series of workshops, clinics and rehearsals in preparation for the debut performance of the Maricopa Jazz Orchestra. Steve Owens, the highly respected Director of Jazz at the University of Oregon will also lead workshops and clinics. Owens has achieved notoriety for his work as an arranger and conductor, as well as for his work at the University of Oregon. "These guys are amazing," according to Bob Galloway at the Fine Arts Development Office. "I'm thrilled that our students and faculty are getting the chance to receive such individualized instruction from some of the leading jazz performers and arrangers in the world." The students and faculty come from five jazz programs at the Maricopa Community Colleges. Each program has received recognition of its own for musical achievement over the years. The public performance is scheduled for the Kerr Cultural Center at 7:30 pm on November 14th. Mintzer also plays the flute and clarinet and is a world-renowned composer, arranger and educator. He has been active in the Jazz, Pop, Orchestra, Latin, and World music genres and has received 8 Grammy nominations for his numerous recordings.
