Chesrown November 30, 2000 Fall Enrollment Again Shows Increase at Maricopa Community CollegesGreater Phoenix, AZ – The Maricopa Community College District has increased enrollment by 3.5 percent for the fall semester, 2000. A total of 105,890 students are enrolled in credit classes throughout the 10-college district this fall. The official enrollment data from the Maricopa Community College District Office of Institutional Research underscores the district’s trend of rapid growth. Dr. Fred Gaskin, Chancellor for Maricopa Community Colleges, said, “Our colleges experience an average annual growth greater than any other community college district in the country. Our colleges educate and train more than 264,000 students year-round, with over 189,000 enrolled in credit classes and 52,000 enrolled in non-credit classes. Our skill centers enroll more than 2,000 annually and over 20,000 receive adult basic education classes.” Gaskin also said conservative projections estimate that by the year 2010, Maricopa Community Colleges will enroll more than 400,000 students. Current fall figures show an increase of 3,591 students in credit courses 1999. In the last 10 years, fall semester enrollment in credit courses has increased by more than 15,500 students. Glendale Community College has broken a college record for enrollment with over 20,000 students. Enrollment increased by 13% at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. South Mountain showed an increase of 11.6%, while Rio Salado enrollment climbed 10.4 %. The district is among the largest and most comprehensive community college systems in the nation, offering affordable, accessible general education classes that transfer to four-year institutions. Combined, the Maricopa Community Colleges constitute the largest single provider of higher education in Arizona, a major source for those seeking post-secondary education and job training.
