Chesrown December 1, 2000 Maricopa County Community Colleges Receive Global Award from AZ World AffairsGreater Phoenix, AZ – At its annual meeting, the World Affairs Council of Arizona presented its Global Award to the Maricopa Community College District for its role in support of international activities in the Valley of the Sun. The Global Award is the highest recognition given by the Scottsdale-based World Affairs Council. Each year, as part of the International Visitor Program in cooperation with the U.S. State Department, the World Affairs Council and its members host more than 400 foreign visitors to Arizona. In presenting the award to Dr. Fred Gaskin, Maricopa Community Colleges, World Affairs, Chancellor, Council President Burgess Raby said, “During the past 10 years, the Maricopa Community College District has provided professional itineraries for more than 100 groups of World Affairs Council international visitors to Arizona. We are pleased to recognize the district’s distinguished record of supporting international activities in Arizona.” Accepting the award with Dr. Gaskin were Dr. Anna Solley, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Student Development, and Bertha Landrum, a retired Vice Chancellor, who now works with the district’s international education program. Dr. Gaskin credited Landrum for the success of the program. He said, “We are honored to receive this prestigious award from the World Affairs Council. It is through the dedication of Bertha Landrum’s collaboration with the Council that the program has achieved such a level of success. Maricopa Community College District will continue its commitment to support the Council’s international activities, especially the International Visitor Program.” Other Maricopa Community Colleges international programs include an association with the city of Chengdu, China, a sister city of the City of Phoenix. More than 400 high level managers of state-owned enterprises from Chengdu have attended the Business Development Program offered by the college district. The Maricopa Community Colleges serve more than 264,000 students annually through ten colleges, skill centers and extension campuses. --mccd--
