Chesrown Media Advisory LIBERTY vs SECURITY – HOW
MUCH ARE WE WILLING TO SACRIFICE? December 11, 2001 – Three months ago today, nearly 4,000 people – Americans and people from many other countries – suffered a tragic death at the hands of terrorists. As America and the world watched in horror, we saw these innocents suffer the most dramatic possible loss of liberty: the loss of their own lives. In the aftermath of the attacks, to make Americans more secure against future threats, we have had our freedom of movement curtailed by more rigorous searches at airports and at entry points into the country. Now other civil liberties are being curtailed in the name of greater personal safety and security. Military tribunals have been authorized by the Commander in Chief to prosecute captured terrorists. How much liberty are we willing to sacrifice in the name of greater security? What are the trade-offs? Should limits be placed on military tribunals? Should we limit the civil liberties of suspected terrorists? Do we want to be more secure and less free? Join us for the next Arizona Issues Forum - Liberty vs. Security - to hear a keynote address and expert panel engage these and other issues related to these questions. The forum will be held on January 28th, 11:30 to 1:00 in the Pulliam Auditorium of the Burton Barr Central Library in downtown Phoenix. Lunch will be provided, so please RSVP to the Maricopa Community Colleges Center for Civic Participation at 480-517-8885.
