GOVERNING BOARD NAMES DR. EUGENE GIOVANNINI PRESIDENT OF GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE –
New Leader Says Business and Education Partnerships are a Top Priority

December 11, 2001 – Dr. Eugene Giovannini says business and education must partner to keep local communities strong. “Providing a skilled workforce that enhances the economic vitality of the valley ensures success for everyone.”

Giovannini, currently the Vice President of Academic Programs at Burlington County College in Pemberton, New Jersey was recommended to become the next GateWay Community College President by Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Fred Gaskin. The Governing Board approved the recommendation and appointed Giovannini at its public meeting on the evening of December 11, 2001. He is expected to begin his tenure in March 2002.

“Dr. Giovannini truly understands the important relationships that the Maricopa Community Colleges have with local businesses,” says Chancellor Gaskin. “GateWay Community College trains many specialty industry employees, from health care to manufacturing. Finding a leader who understands that role was a primary consideration.”

Giovannini received his Doctor of Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, his Master of Education and Bachelor’s Degree, both with an emphasis in Business Education from Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and has received Executive Education from the Wharton Institute for Research on Higher Education at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Fred Gaudet has been serving as Interim President since January of 2000 when then President Dr. Phillip Randolph, was appointed Vice Chancellor of Human Resources for the district.

GateWay Community College is a comprehensive community college with an emphasis on both academic and occupational programs. GateWay has six academic divisions with more than 85 certificate and degree programs. Celebrating over 30 years of excellence, GateWay serves more than 17,000 students annually at its main campus at 40th Street and Washington, the Maricopa Skill Center and GateWay High School.

The Maricopa County Community College District is one of the largest community college districts in the nation. It includes 10 colleges – Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Estrella Mountain Community College, GateWay Community College, Glendale Community College, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Phoenix College, Rio Salado College, Scottsdale Community College and South Mountain Community College.
