  • PC Press Publishes Booklove

    booklove

The Phoenix College Press is pleased to announce the publication of its newest title, Booklove: Creating Good Books for Children in an Age that Values Neither. Edited by award-winning children's author Juanita Havill, this anthology of essays and interviews is a timely and provocative examination of the current state of children's literature. The wide range of views from prominent professionals in the field - writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, independent booksellers, librarians, teachers - makes this book essential for anyone involved in creating, producing or marketing children's books. Booklove is also valuable reading for anyone interested in education, reading advocacy and literacy or parenting. Booklove is for anyone who cares about the importance of good books in the emotional and intellectual development of children. Following are some of important issues addressed in Booklove:

    • Young readers are underestimated by publishers of children's books.
    • Marketing dominates the publishing industry. Too many books are about profit rather than quality.
    • Children are viewed as consumers rather than as readers.
    • Merging of trade publishers threatens the literary substance and originality of books being published for young readers.
    • Many good writers and illustrators must overcome "bottom-line commercialism" to maintain their art and integrity.

Contributors include Marion Dane Bauer, Emilie Buchwald, Judy Delton, Hazel Dick, Carol Erdahl, James Cross Giblin, Judith Gorog, G. Brian Karas, Beverly J. Klug, Alice McLerran, David Meth, Barry Moser, Kevin O'Malley, Anna Olswanger, Connie Porter, Harold Underdown, Mary Wong and Phoebe Yeh.

Booklove may be ordered by phone at (602) 285-7495, on the World Wide Web at www.pc.maricopa.edu or by mail at The Phoenix College Press c/o Marketing Office, 1202 W. Thomas Rd.
