  • SMCC AND COX PARTNER
    FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS
    TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Cox Communications and South Mountain Community College have partnered to develop a new program of study for students planning careers in telecommunications technology - a cable telecommunications track. smcc logoDesigned to prepare students for employment with Arizona's regional telecommunications companies, the cable telecommunications track prepares and certifies students for technical positions through specialized training in telecommunications, hands-on electronics and field experience. Program participants may earn Certificates of Completion in either Cable Telecommunications Installation or Service as well as an Associate's Degree in Telecommunications Technology.

Cliff Heide, Director of Telecommunications Technology at SMCC, said the program's curriculum equips students to find employment with starting salaries typically ranging between $20,000 to $45,000. "The telecommunications program is all about opportunity in a field that is experiencing tremendous growth," Heide said. "Students will learn the skills that local companies are seeking. The program offers a comprehensive background in telecom. In addition, the telecommunications program equips students currently employed by Arizona's telecom companies with the skills needed for promotion."

Cox Communications played an active role by aiding in the development of a state-of-the-art telecommunications lab at the campus. In addition, Cox officials worked with the South Mountain Community College faculty on the curriculum for the program and Cox technical trainers will also teach many of the courses.
