  • FIPP PROGRAM PUTS
    "GROW OUR OWN" IN ACTION

faculty in progressThe Maricopa Community Colleges established the Faculty Recruitment Commission in the fall of 2000 with the primary goal to develop strategies for faculty recruitment. The Commission recently developed the Faculty in Progress Pilot (FIPP), a program that is being implemented for the academic 2001-2002 academic year.

The new pilot program is based on the College District's "grow our own" concept and responds to several needs. First, a number of full time faculty members will be eligible for retirement within the next three to five years. It is expected the District will need to hire more than 100 faculty instructors (including both new and replacement faculty) each year for the next decade. The second reason is related to changing demographics. In keeping with the Governing Board's goal to serve students by hiring faculty and staff who reflect the communities served by the colleges as well as creating an environment of equity and mutual respect, a greater ethnic diversity among faculty and staff is desired.

The purpose of FIPP is to provide future Maricopa faculty candidates with an opportunity to increase their skills and knowledge so they are prepared to become full time faculty members. The program is targeted to employees who have the potential to secure a full time faculty position and provide them with the opportunity to increase their skills and knowledge in identified areas that will assist them in procuring a residential faculty position through the FIPP nine month internship.

For the initial pilot program, eleven participants were selected from the under-represented populations as per the Maricopa Community Colleges' Affirmative Action Plan.
"This is truly a pilot program. One of the advantages is that each of the ten colleges will help structure the program and provide input," said Rosemary Kesler, Coordinator of FIPP. Candidates for the internships were required to be eligible for Community College State Board certification and meet the District's hiring qualifications within one year. Candidates developed a learning contract and expressed their commitment to obtaining a full time residential faculty position with one of the ten colleges in the District.

Kesler explained that each of the selected faculty interns will receive professional development opportunities, relevant internship experiences, teaching experience as well as mentoring from a full time faculty member.
