20th ANNIVERSARY OF SOUTH MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE SET FOR MONDAY, November 6, 5 – 7 p.m.Governor Jane Dee Hull and Phoenix City Council Member Cody Williams are the featured guests on Monday, Nov. 6, in a community-wide celebration and picnic at South Mountain Community College, 5 to 7 p.m. The gathering celebrates the new Technology Center and Student Enrollment Services Building at the college. Festivities also center on the 20th anniversary of the college, a "hub" of South Phoenix communities.
The new Technology Center and Student Enrollment Services Building are the culmination of much planning, hard work, and dreams. The nearly $5.7 million project results from the generosity of voters who, in 1994, approved the sale of general obligation bonds to improve facilities throughout the 10 colleges in the Maricopa Community College District.
Three major entities are joining hands for a new era of service to the Town of Guadalupe and surrounding communities. Celebrating that partnership and dedicating their buildings on Thursday, October 26, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. are the South Mountain Community College Guadalupe Center, the Town of Guadalupe and the future Boys & Girls Club of the East Valley. The Guadalupe Center is a 5,000-square-foot building with state-of-the-art technology, providing education and training for students. The Multi-Purpose Center for the Town of Guadalupe has 17,000 square feet, while the Boys & Girls Club of the East Valley when complete will be 24,000 square feet.
A short program begins at 6 p.m. at the complex, 9233 S. Avenida del Yaqui (just south of Guadalupe Road). A Mexican-food buffet, vocal performance by the popular Socorito, and dancing by the youth group Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo are part of the celebration. Jesse Osuna, a native of Guadalupe, will deliver a blessing ceremony.
