  • CHANDLER-GILBERT STUDENT OFFICERS HONOR FORMER DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE

When Duane Oakes, former Director of Student Life, Chandler-Gilbert, attended the September Governing Board Meeting, he had no idea that Deanna Stones, Student Body President of CGCC, would be making a presentation recognizing him. Thus, Duanne was not quite prepared for the honor given to him by the CGCC students. This was quite evident in the tears that welled up in his eyes as Deanna gave tribute to his compassion, understanding and commitment toward the students at Chandler-Gilbert.

In speaking about Oakes, Deanna referred to a Mother Teresa quote hanging in his office: "'Love has to be put into action and that action is service.'" Deanna said, "This quote is an example of Duane’s character."

In building the student life program at Chandler-Gilbert, Deanna stated in her proclamation, "He (Oakes) has developed a program that reaches out to all students on campus. Duane has influenced many lives; he has touched many hearts. Through his example of happiness and love, many leaders have been created, many people have reached goals and never-ending friendships have been made."

Speaking directly to Oakes and on behalf of Chandler-Gilbert students, Deanna said, "Thank you, Duane, for taking individuals and creating leaders. Thank you for the smiles and the tears and thank you for teaching us the importance of service towards others."

Not only was this an emotional moment for Oakes and CGCC students, but also for those in attendance. Governing Board President Gene Eastin perhaps reflected the feelings of the audience when he publicly said to Oakes, "There is no greater honor for a faculty or a staff person than to be so praised by students."
