    INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK SET FOR NOVEMBER 13-17


    United States Secretary of education Richard W. Riley and United States Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright have called for the celebration of International Education Week, November 13-17, 2000. International Education Week is part of a cooperative response by the Department of Education and State to the Presidential policy directive on international education.

    In observance of International Education week, Maricopa colleges are promoting education with several activities. At Phoenix College, there is the International Student Lecture Series, a partnership with the Senior Adult program. Dates and times have not been finalized as EdCetera went to press.

    Chandler-Gilbert’s International Cultural Exchange (ICE) is hosting an International Coffee on November 9, 6:00 p.m. The event will feature coffees from Kenya and Saudi, Arabia with finger food. Students will cite poetry, sing and tell native folklore from their respective countries. On November 14, an International Student Forum is planned from 12:35 – 1:30 p.m. The ICE club will sell international desserts on November 15 during community hour as their fundraiser for the semester. There are also plans to have an international guest speaker on campus during International Education Week.

    Scottsdale Community College has “Go Abroad Tables” scheduled every day throughout that week from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The tables staffed by students, faculty and staff will encourage study abroad, foreign language study and provide information on other international education programs.

    On Monday, November 13, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., is a presentation on “All about Model United Nations. An Italian film is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday as well. Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., there is a slide show titled “Working on Violence Against Women in Russia.” Bill Miller entertains on Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. Miller, a 1999 Native American Musician of the Year, is a recipient of five awards for his Ghostdance CD. Then at three that afternoon, Dr. Anneliese Harper, instructor, will discuss her trip to Turkey which was organized by the Council for International Education Exchange. “Chats at the O.A.S.I.S. Café: Student to Student Communication” culminates International Education week’s activities on Thursday, 2:00 p.m.
