MARICOPANS IN THE NEWS

Margaret McConnell, Legal Department, is chair-elect of the American Heart Association regional board that includes Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.

Margie Mesanko, administrative assistant, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, has been elected to the board of directors for Mesa Sierra Ranch II Homeowners' Association. She serves as treasurer.

photo of Marshall TrimbleMarshall Trimble writes extensively about Arizona history. Now, this Scottsdale Community College Director of Southwest Studies is part of history himself. Trimble’s life as a historian and folk singer, plus his latest book on Arizona, are being archived at the Library of Congress. As part of a bicentennial celebration, the library collected photos, videos, oral histories, books and periodicals about more than 1,300 “slices of life" nationwide. The project, Local Legacies, also includes 38 other people, places, and events of Arizona for posterity.

John Kavanagh, Director of Administration of Justice Studies, Scottsdale Community College, has been appointed to fill the Fountain Hills Town Council seat of Marianne Wiggishoff, who has resigned. Council members selected him unanimously from a group of eight applicants.

Dr. Bustamante will serve for three years and be the only community college representative on the task force.

Barbara Santangelo, Maricopa Skill Center coordinator of student services, has been appointed to the Board of Arizona Association for Student Financial Aid Administrators.

photo of David harbsterDavid Harbster, now Paradise Valley Community College environmental biology/biology faculty, has received the nation's highest honor for U.S. science teachers in grades kindergarten through 12. Harbster, an advance placement biology teacher at Moon Valley High School from 1997 to 1999, is among 200 teachers selected for the 1999 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Harbster, who earned a Master's degree in biology education from ASU, won a $7,500 educational grant to be used at Moon Valley High School, a Presidential citation, and a trip to Washington, D.C., for a series of recognition events, including an awards ceremony.

Jeanne also works at the District Offices as support personnel for Faculty Professional Growth.

"Against All Odds: Tobacco Cessation in the Prison System," was the poster presentation by Meredith Smith, Mesa Community College, Cessation Coordinator for the Mesa Partnership for Tobacco Free Youth and Community, at the 11th World Conference on Tobacco and Health during the summer in Chicago, Illinois. This biennial conference unites an estimated 4,000 international leaders concerned about the global epidemic of diseases from tobacco. The Mesa Partnership is a part of the Center for Public Policy and Service at Mesa Community College.

Barbara Lacy, marketing, has won a first place from Arizona Press Women and a third place from the National Federation of Press Women for the Maricopa Skill Center 1999-2000 Catalog.

Gov. Jane Hull has appointed Maricopa Skill Center Director Stan Grossman to the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery.

Arizona Skill Olympics 2000 presented a plaque to the Maricopa Skill Center for outstanding contributions and support to the Olympics’ Collision Technology Committee.

 Rene Diaz-Lefebvre photoRene Diaz-Lefebvre, psychology faculty at Glendale Community College, will appear in "Psychology In Action," a telecourse that will explore the fundamentals of human psychology. The series will include real-life case studies with subject matter experts, and historical and contemporary research. Coastline Community College is producing the series in cooperation with PBS television station KOCE-TV. Dr. Diaz-Lefebvre, a national leader and pioneer in applying a multiple intelligences/learning for understanding model at the higher education and adult learning level, will provide insight on intelligence, creativity, and learning. Initially, the series will be distributed to two-and four-year colleges in the United States for adoption effective summer, 2001.

Dr. Kenneth Hart, Director of Institutional Planning, Research, and Assessment at Paradise Valley Community College, has been named the new Two-Year College representative and member of the executive board of the Consortium for Assessment and Planning Support (CAPS) for the 2000-2001 year. CAPS has 300-plus members who are assessment and planning specialists from 46 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, Japan, and Europe.

Linda Walker, the Maricopa Skill Center Computer Office Procedures instructor, earned her Master of Arts Degree, in Human Resources, Organization Change Management, with a 4.0 GPA, from Ottawa University.

Hedy Fossenkemper,Computer Information Systems faculty at Paradise Valley College, earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Media and Computers from Arizona State University.
