Background
Formal mentorship opportunities exist through a number of programs such as the Women’s Leadership Group, The Chair Academy, and the Leadership Advancement Program. Employees not eligible or outside of these programs could also benefit from a mentoring relationship. In March 2009, a survey was conducted with MAT and PSA employees to determine the level of interest in a mentoring program that would be open to all employees.
Based on the survey results, a pilot program was developed and implemented. The follow-up comments from the participants were extremely positive and therefore the concept has been developed into a program that will be made available to all employees beginning this fall.
Desired Outcomes
The mentor program will focus on three main objectives:
- Increasing the engagement of employees through interactions with a mentor,
- Assisting employees in developing a mentoring relationship for career development in an effort to increase knowledge, skills, and competencies that may be needed for current job duties or future career advancement.
- Provide an avenue to access available resources and information to support lateral or upward mobility within MCCCD.
Organizational Impact
How does the Mentorship Program relate to the strategic success of the organization?
- Employee retention - retain our employee base by ensuring their commitment to the organization, by providing employees with opportunities for lateral or upward mobility within the organization,
- Employee development and engagement - engaging employees through professional and personal development;
- Aligns with Talent Management Initiative
The objectives of the program not only align with MCCCD’s mission, vision, and values but with the Chancellor’s foundational principles of:
- Student Success
- Public Stewardship
- One Maricopa
