Career Development
Picture this…….
You walk into a big conference room to attend a function. The room is filled with people conversing, there are no tables. Introductions are being made and business cards are being exchanged. You stand at the door and wonder, where should I go first, whom should I talk to?
Does this sound like a networking event that you might attend?
Some people get nervous and don’t even enter the room, others leave, while others may stand in the back of the room, or cling on to their friend like they’re a life preserver!
Well, in order to help employees learn how to navigate these types of functions as well as others, Career Development offered a workshop entitled, Career Networking Skills.
The focus of this workshop was to enable employees to:
- Learn how to define networking
- Understand the importance of networking
- Recognize the various types of networking events & methods for networking
- Practice demonstrating networking techniques
- And learn some follow-up strategies
When employees completed this class, they commented that:
- “The networking skills gained are perfect for helping to learn more about other areas of your institution, thereby, increasing communication and breaking down silos.”
- “I will utilize the skills learned from this workshop to properly network with a purpose….”
So look for this workshop next semester along with the other Career Development workshops offered through EOLT.
Maricopa Learns Through Service
Save the Family is an organization that provides housing, focuses on children and changes lives of those who utilize their services.
They empower families to conquer homelessness and achieve life-long independence. With over 190 housing units across the East Valley, Save the Family needs volunteers for "Welcome Home." This semester, a group of 15 MCCCD employees volunteered in the first MLTS – Community Project.
Employees participated in this first time activity by cleaning a 2 bedroom apartment for a family to move into the following week. This group of employees cleaned, mopped, vacuumed, and painted walls all the while learning and reflecting on what this means to us at MCCCD. Participants provided insights into how this event tied in with the mission/vision of MCCCD, the Chancellor’s 3 Guiding Principles and their day-to-day work at their individual colleges or district.
