The MAT policy group, along with Human Resources, has expressed a desire to change the current tool used for performance appraisals. After a request for participants put out by the MAT Association President, the MAT Performance Appraisal Advisory Team was created. The team convened for their first meeting on March 7, 2008. Mr. Al Crusoe, Vice-Chancellor for Human Resources, shared his desire and expectations at this meeting.
Mr. Crusoe shared that we have low completion rates of the MAT performance appraisal tool. He indicated that the tool’s primary purpose should be for employee development. However, many supervisors use it for disciplinary items.
The team was asked to develop an instrument for appropriate employee development that helps both the supervisor and employee and assists with talent management. This can be accomplished by using technology to compile appraisal information that links to professional development opportunities with competencies. The tool could also be used as a model for the other employee groups to use in the future.
Since this is a district wide supported change initiative, we need to do more than just revise the form in order to make a difference. We will need to create a new mindset, and change the culture for employee development as it relates to the institution.
We need to look at all the pieces, including training and technology, to make sure everything works well with the development system concept to create the desired outcomes.
