TOWN OF CAREFREE
The Town of Carefree is a compact town north of Phoenix
and Scottsdale in northeastern
Maricopa County with a population approaching 3,000. The Maricopa Community
Colleges
currently serve the Town of Carefree through Scottsdale Community College,
Paradise Valley
Community College and the future seventy acre site of SCC/PVCC North
Campus at 56th
Street, south of Cave Creek Highway as well as through teaching sites
located within driving
distance of town boundaries or in the adjoining Town of Cave Creek.
Carefree residents also
enjoy the educational and community services provided through other
colleges within the ten-
college Maricopa County Community College District.

Many students access their educational services through
the Internet and others attend
teaching sites which provide evening and weekend coursework and training,
with students
often being working adults. The closest teaching site is at cactus Shadows
High School
in adjacent Cave Creek. In addition, many of the Maricopa Community
Colleges maintain
partnerships with corporations, industries and non-profits organizations
located near Carefree.
Scottsdale Community College opened its doors in 1970
and is located on land leased
from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Scottsdale is known
for several
unique programs including Equine Science, Culinary Arts, American Indian
Programs, Hotel/
Restaurant management and as home to the Maricopa Colleges Television
Station (MCTV).
In 2001, Scottsdale Community College served approximately
20,000 students in 561,152
square feet of facility on the main campus. The annual budget of Scottsdale
Community
College is approximately $30,000,000 with most of those funds being
spent on salaries or on
the purchase of goods and materials from state and local merchants.
The Maricopa Community Colleges served more than 277,000
students in 2000-2001 and
maintained corporate partnerships with more than 1,000 businesses in
the Valley. Of all high
school graduates in Maricopa County, 45%attend one of the community
colleges within one
year of graduation.
