CITY OF PHOENIX
The City of Phoenix is the sixth largest city in America
and the state Capitol with a population
over 1,300,000. The Maricopa Community Colleges currently serve the
City of Phoenix
through Phoenix College on West Thomas, GateWay Community College on
40th Street,
Paradise Valley Community College in northeast Phoenix, South Mountain
Community College
on South 24th Street,the City Colleges center in downtown Phoenix, the
Maricopa Skill center
on East Buckeye Road, Rio Salado College at Paradise Valley Mall and
on Seventh Avenue,
GateWay Community High School, the Ahwatukee Foothills center and the
Small Business
Development Center as well as ninety-nine additional teaching sites
located within city
boundaries. Phoenix residents also enjoy the educational and community
services provided
through other colleges within the ten-college Maricopa County Community
College District.

Many students access their educational services through
the Internet and others attend the
99 teaching sites located within the City of Phoenix which provide evening
and weekend
coursework and training, with students often being working adults. Such
services were
provided at 28 schools, 12 police or public safety offices, 18 state,county
and city offices, and
41 law firms, malls or corporations. In addition,many of the Maricopa
Community Colleges
maintain partnerships with corporations, industries and non-profits
organizations located in
Phoenix.
Phoenix Community College is the oldest college, founded
in 1920 while the other colleges
and centers have been developed to meet the needs of an ever-expanding
Phoenix
population. In 2001, the combined colleges - Phoenix, GateWay, Paradise
Valley, Rio Salado,
South Mountain - and the Maricopa Skill Center and other facilities
outlined above served
more than 103,000 students in 1,395,378 square feet of facility on the
various campuses. The
annual combined budgets of these community colleges are slightly more
than $96,000,000
with most of those funds being spent on salaries or on the purchase
of goods and materials
from state and local merchants.
The Maricopa Community Colleges served more than 277,000
students in 2000-2001 and
maintained corporate partnerships with more than 1,000 businesses in
the Valley. Of all high
school graduates in Maricopa County, 45% attend one of the community
colleges within one
year of graduation.
