General Information and Application Process

Employment pools are conducted throughout the year and applications are accepted between the opening and closing dates of each pool. The application package consists of three documents: an MCCCD application, an AZPOST Medical Waiver form to be signed by the examining physician (for POPAT) and an AZPOST Personal History form, which must be signed and notarized

Qualifications

Current Arizona POST active or inactive peace officer certificate or:

Prior experience as a peace officer in a state other than Arizona or with the federal government and whose training substantially conforms to the basic course of the state of Arizona.

Persons in an inactive status and eligible to be reinstated must complete the Arizona Post reinstatement process. Applicants will be required to submit documentation establishing that they meet the minimum Arizona POST training requirements and successfully complete the Arizona POST waiver examination. This process takes approximately three months.

Persons ineligible to be reinstated from an inactive status as specified by Arizona POST Rule R13-4-104.E or who have served as a peace officer in another state or with the federal government must successfully complete the Arizona POST waiver examination prior to employment with MCCCD.

Selection Process

The expected duration of the selection process is affected by a number of factors. The process typically is completed within three to five months and includes the following:.

Physical Fitness Evaluation

The Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) is a timed test including an obstacle course, a weighted bag drag, two 6' fences, and a 500 yard-yard run. Evaluation is designed to give the applicant an opportunity to demonstrate his/her physical condition. Scoring is Pass/Fail.

District Oral Board

Applicants will be evaluated to determine skill levels in verbal communication, judgment, problem solving, and other desired skills, including writing reports.

College Interviews

Applicants who successfully complete the oral board phase of the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list. Once a vacant position has been identified a college may select persons from the eligibility list to interview for posted openings on their campuses. Interviews are sometimes scheduled on short notice. Applicants should take care to notify the Employee Services department of address or telephone number changes.

Background Investigation

Applicants who successfully complete the college interview phase of the selection process will be required to undergo a background investigation consistent with Arizona POST requirements.

Polygraph Examination

When the applicant is notified of the commencement of the background investigation he/she will also be scheduled for a polygraph examination. Upon arrival for the polygraph examination the applicant MUST provide the following:

Medical Examination

Candidates to whom a conditional offer of employment has been made will undergo a medical examination administered by a licensed physician. The examination will include a physical examination, vision test, hearing test, chest x-ray, laboratory tests, and a drug screening. The medical examination is scheduled and paid for by MCCCD.

Psychological Evaluation

The psychological evaluation is behaviorally based and is intended to assess the applicant's suitability for peace officer duties as a District employee. A minimum of four (4) hours should be allotted for this evaluation.

Formal Officer Employment

Once the selection process is completed and all requirements have been met, the candidate will be notified and a confirmed offer of employment extended. Upon acceptance of the offer of employment the candidate's name will be submitted to the District Governing Board for approval.
