Job Summary
Supervises and trains staff in the preparation of equipment
and materials used for lecture and laboratory experiments. Develops and
implements laboratory safety procedures that adhere to Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) standards, as well as outreach activities that
promote science education.
Scope
This position works in an assigned area. Work contacts
include adminstrators, faculty, staff, students, vendors, safety inspectors and
repair staff. Equipment used includes various laboratory equipment and
machinery and standard office equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the department/division chair that
is responsible for the science laboratory area; receives general direction
regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding
non-routine matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Lab Technician and other assigned staff.
Representative Duties
Oversees the daily operation of the area and may develop
operational procedures; assists faculty in the design of lab set-ups and
protocols; plans and coordinates lab preparation activities including
maintenance and inventory of chemicals, supplies and equipment; trains,
supervises and monitors Lab Technicians, students and temporaries in the safe
preparation, cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment; develops, implements
and oversees laboratory safety programs to insure compliance with OSHA
standards; assists in developing and implementing programs to facilitate
college-wide compliance with OSHA standards; develops and implements policies
to insure the safe storage and handling of hazardous materials; maintains
records and prepares reports as required; oversees preventive maintenance,
repair and replacement procedures to insure effective operation of all
laboratory equipment; prepares and maintains budget; analyzes and interprets
data; maintains files; works with vendors; administrative duties; maintains
database to monitor inventory; orders equipment and materials; provides field
trip planning and support; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: laboratory operations and techniques;
technical acumen; computer software operation; handling and storage of
hazardous chemicals; federal and state OSHA guidelines for safe laboratory
practices and management of hazardous materials; recordkeeping procedures;
budget management.
Ability to: develop and implement policies and programs to
insure the safe and effective operation of a science laboratory; train and
supervise assigned staff; organize work schedules and coordinate lab preparation
activities at multiple sites; work with administrators to develop programs to
insure OSHA compliance; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively
orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships in the
course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in physical, life or
biological science; completion of OSHA Training Institute class, Laboratory
Safety and Health or other similar laboratory safety training; and related
supervisory experience in an academic or industrial laboratory.

Working Conditions
Positions in this class may be required to lift up to 50‑lb
objects; may occasionally be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Some positions may require a Class D Driver's
License.
