Job Summary
Supervises the installation and maintenance of computer
software, hardware, and applications on a local area network for use in a
college‑wide or laboratory setting.
Plans and coordinates the installation of various NOS (network operating
system) software on multiple servers.
Scope
This position works in an assigned area. Work contacts include administrators, faculty,
staff, community network staff, and students.
Equipment used includes servers, microcomputers, printers, network
diagnostic, and related equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific
instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Supervises Network Technicians, Computer Lab Technicians,
students, and temporaries
Representative Duties
Designs and configures college‑wide local area network
servers and services; installs network and workstation operating systems;
coordinates college network services with community network staff members;
implements end user network services (i.e., printing, disk quotas, user
accounts); installs and maintains network and computer lab peripherals (e.g.,
printers, modems, or related equipment); documents installation and maintenance
of software, device, and user services; performs server and workstation
diagnostics; maintains catalog on software and hardware; maintains diagnoses,
and repairs computer equipment, if necessary arranges for repair; maintains
inventory of proprietary software and computer hardware; provides storage and
backup of software; requests and maintains supplies; develops procedures for
server and workstation usage; develops work schedule for computer and network
technicians, and lab assistants; updates software as needed; dispenses
hardware/software and documentation to faculty as needed; performs related
duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge
of: personal computers, workstations, and local area networks; network
operating systems; data base, word processing, and telecommunications; personal
computer hardware; network interfaces devices and cabling.
Ability
to: develop designs for multi-vendor network environments; recommend server and
workstation configurations; train and supervise assigned staff and students;
maintain and repair computer equipment; organize work schedules; maintain accurate
records; communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish
cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of
performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be college coursework and/or experience in
network server installation/maintenance, microcomputer hardware/software
support, data base and information processing.
Special Conditions of Employment
Working Conditions
Positions in this class may be exposed to cold temperatures;
may be required to lift up to 50‑lb. objects; work weekends or evenings. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
