Job Summary
Assists in planning, development, training and evaluation of
outcome‑based curriculum for specific vocational courses for incarcerated
students.
Scope
This position works in the area of Vocational Training. Work contacts include college and Department
of Corrections administration and staff, faculty and students. Equipment used includes standard office
equipment and equipment relevant to the vocational program.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Director of Prison Education;
receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific
instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Oversees incarcerated vocational students and provides work
direction to inmate instructional aides in an institutional setting.
Representative Duties
Assists in evaluating and selecting instructional materials;
assists in planning and implementing vocational curriculum; provides student
assessment and classroom training; maintains attendance in construction and
other classroom records; serves as program liaison with prison unit; works with
advisory committees on curriculum development and job placement; performs
related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge of:
specialized vocational area; student assessment and placement as related to
vocational instruction (including strategies and varied techniques for teaching
adults at‑risk learners); curriculum development, implementation,
evaluation and selection of vocational materials and equipment.
Ability to:
plan, develop and evaluate curriculum and develop specific vocational
competencies that demonstrate the proficiency of the student; evaluate and
select effective instructional materials; assess student skills and develop
appropriate vocational study plans; maintain liaison for vocational advisory
committee; work with groups of students who may be at different competencies;
communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish cooperative working
relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned
duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in a technical field and/or
journeyman level experience or occupational experience in the required field.
Special Conditions of Employment
Pass the Department of Corrections security background
check. Requires some evening work
during the semester for orientation of students. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
