Job Summary
Provides clinical and related theoretical
instruction and
supervision to students in a dental hygiene clinic facility,
laboratory,
extra-mural clinical rotation or college setting.
Scope
This position works in the area of dental
hygiene
education. Work contacts include college
and administrators, faculty, staff, students and hospital staff. Equipment used includes computers,
audiovisual equipment and a variety of dental instruments and equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Director of
Dental Hygiene;
receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and
specific
instructions regarding non routine matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on location/department, directs
the work of
students. Supervises and directs
clinical dentists and dental hygiene clinical lab associates.
Representative Duties
Supervises, instructs and evaluates
students in classroom,
lab or clinical settings; provides instruction, supervision and
evaluation of
the dental hygiene process of care for patients served by student
dental
hygienists; plans and conducts student conferences and remediation
efforts,
demonstrates dental hygiene skills and procedures; performs clinical
instruction and demonstrations; observes and evaluates skills
demonstrations by
students; schedules and maintains extra-mural clinical rotations with
healthcare agencies; directs clinical dentists and clinical lab
associates
and/or other healthcare professionals in clinical settings; calibrates
clinical
dentists and clinical lab associates and/or other healthcare
professionals; assists
students in tutoring and clinical skills enhancement activities;
monitors and
tracks testing and student progress; plans and reviews dental hygiene
assignments; maintains and monitors quality assurance plan in
lab/clinical
setting; participates in clinic and program policy manual updates;
prepares
classroom, lab and clinical equipment for demonstrations and lectures;
performs
minor dental equipment repairs; monitors necessary supplies and
equipment;
interacts with dental equipment vendors; maintains specialized program
accreditation standards; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: current dental hygiene
clinical skills,
techniques and equipment; educational methodology; audiovisual and
computer/software equipment.
Ability to: supervise
and evaluate students; conduct clinical instruction; coordinate work
with
various locations; communicate effectively orally and in writing,
establish
cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the process
of
performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training,
and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be work experience as a registered
dental
hygienist in a teaching role. A college
degree and current dental hygiene license and local anesthesia
certification in
the State of
Special Conditions of Employment
Licensure as a dental hygienist in the
State of Arizona,
Arizona local anesthesia certification, CPR-HealthCare Provider
certification,
completed Hepatitis B immunization series and annual update of blood
borne
pathogens.
This class may require incumbents to sit,
stand and walk for
extended periods of time; may be
required to lift objects up to 40 pounds. Expect
exposure to blood borne pathogens and
infectious diseases; ionizing radiation and hazardous chemical agents. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
