Job Summary
Directs and administers the sports medicine program for an
assigned college. Performs a variety of technical duties involved in the
treatment, care and prevention of athletic injuries.
Scope
This position works in the area of athletics. Work contacts include faculty, staff,
students, physicians and parents.
Equipment used includes therapeutic modalities, medical instruments,
strength endurance devices and electric cart.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Athletic Director; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions
regarding non-routine and highly sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on
location/department, may supervise the positions of student athletic trainers,
clerical support staff and students.
Representative Duties
Evaluates physical condition and advises athletes; provides
information to athletes on the prevention and treatment of athletic injury;
works with team physician implementing prescribed physical therapy and
rehabilitation programs for injured athletes; assists in the development of
conditioning programs; evaluates injuries of student athletes; applies
immediate treatment such as artificial respiration, bandaging wounds; applies
preventative, protective taping and padding; wraps extremities to support
muscles and ligaments; provides medical referrals as required; meets with coach
and player to review treatment plan of athlete undergoing rehabilitation;
oversees and participates in filing student insurance forms and claims for
sports related injuries; schedules, coordinates and assists in performing
student athlete physical examinations; ensures students comply with all NJCAA
regulations, policies and procedures related to medical clearance for sports
participation; provides or coordinates staff training; coordinates, recruits,
monitors and oversees students involved in the student athletic training
program; maintains and updates a variety or confidential records including
medical records, injury reports, treatment logs and progress reports on student
athletics; recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and
objectives; communicates changes to student athletics, coaches and physicians;
oversees home game activities; schedules pre-physicals; orders athletic
supplies; maintains budget; schedules athletic trainer coverage; performs
related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: human physiology and anatomy; NATA and NJCAA
regulations; use and maintenance of athletic training equipment.
Ability to: evaluate injury and determine treatment;
administer first aid and CPR; maintain accurate records; supervise student
athletic trainers; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish
cooperative working relationships with persons contacted during the course of
performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be coursework in sports medicine, sports
science, physical therapy, physical education or related field and/or
demonstrated experience in athletic training, conditioning and rehabilitation.
Special Conditions of Employment
CPR/AED certification; State of Arizona Class D Drivers
license; First Aid certificate; National Athletic Trainer Association Board of
Certification; Arizona Board of Athletic Trainer Certification.
Working Conditions
Position may require ability to lift up to 50-lb. objects;
exposure to various weather conditions; local travel.
