Job Summary


Plan, organizes, directs, coordinates and supervises the grounds and/or maintenance activities necessary to provide a clean, safe and attractive college/center or district facility.


Scope


This position works in an assigned area.  Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students, vendors, government agencies, outside contractors and the general public.  Equipment used includes a variety of landscaping and maintenance equipment and standard office equipment.


Supervision Received


This position reports to an assigned administrator who is responsible for the assigned area; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non-routine and highly sensitive matters.


Supervision Exercised


Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Groundskeeper and/or Custodian, HVAC Technician, Utility Worker, Building Maintenance Technician, Maintenance Assistant and/or other assigned staff.


Representative Duties


Organizes, directs and coordinates all groundskeeping and/or maintenance and custodial services; follows up to insure all assignments have been completed; implements approved methods and procedures; interprets rules/regulations; assigns staff to shifts and posts; purchases and maintains inventory for assigned area; hires and provides training for assigned staff; supervises and evaluates staff; responsible for purchase and issuance of supplies; recommends equipment, vendors, chemicals and suppliers; may oversee room setups, furniture and equipment moving; coordinates setups and inventory changes; assists with the development of policies and procedures related to custodial, grounds and/or maintenance activities; initiates requisitions, for outside signage; reports accidents; maintains supply usage records; may conduct inspections of facilities for OSHA compliance; ensures groundskeeping equipment is maintained; develops schedule for seasonal care and new landscaping; may be responsible for contracts on fire suppression system and security system;  performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: current practices of groundskeeping, landscaping, maintenance and/or custodial operations; cleaning methods; supplies and tools used to perform duties in assigned area; appropriate state and federal OSHA regulations; herbicide and pesticide regulations.


Ability to: direct the training of assigned staff; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be college coursework in safety and maintenance and/or experience in trades, industrial cleaning, landscaping and/or maintenance in a supervisory capacity.


Special Conditions of Employment


Position may be on a twenty‑four (24) hour emergency call.


Working Conditions


Positions in this class may occasionally require strenuous lifting of 50 pounds, bending and climbing; may be exposed to chemicals and outside weather conditions. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
