TITLE: SUPERVISOR INTERPRETING SERVICES FOR THE DEAF

Job Summary

 

Performs work of considerable difficulty in developing, monitoring and supervising a comprehensive service of interpreter/transliterators, oral interpreters, real time captioners, C-Print operators, and any other communication resource needed to accommodate Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.


Scope


This position works in and outside a classroom setting and in the Disability Resource Services Office. Work contacts include students, faculty, and interpreters for the deaf (interpreting agencies) and Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Equipment used includes standard office equipment (TTY and Video Phone).

 

Supervision Received


This position reports to an administrator responsible for the assigned area; receives general direction regarding routine matters and specific instructions regarding non-routine matters.


Supervision Exercised


Supervises staff, assigned temporary sign language interpreters/transliterators, interns, and students.


Representative Duties


Supervises and coordinates scheduling of appropriate interpreter/transliteration and/or other services for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Services may include, but are not limited to interpreter/transliteration for lectures, discussion sessions, lab classes, faculty/staff meeting, and college related activities; responsible for the recruiting, selecting, hiring and evaluation of qualified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter/transliterators, oral interpreters, real time captioners, C-print operators, and any other communication resources; supervises and evaluates ASL interpreter/transliterators; develops and implements service goals, objectives and procedures regarding internal management of the interpreter/transliterator program, prepares reports of DRS interpreter/transliterator program; responds, as appropriate, to complaints or problems and makes necessary adjustments to ensure appropriate service provision; may perform individual needs assessments regarding language variable in order to determine appropriate interpreting method and strategies; maintains liaison with other departmental staff; provides technical assistance and campus-wide consultation for departments, faculty, and staff regarding interpreting and American Sign Language; prepares administrative and statistical reports (e.g. total hours of interpreting provided for each student, annual report, and other regulatory reports as needed); reviews and evaluates unit documentation in department databases and personnel records; performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: issues, terminology, and standards in the interpreter/transliterator profession; American Sign Language; certification requirements for national certification in American Sign Language; supervisory practices and principles; recordkeeping procedures; budget management.

 

Ability to: develop and implement policies and programs to provide interpreting/transliterating services according to governmental regulations; train, supervise, and evaluate assigned staff; organize and coordinate work schedules for assigned staff; prepare regulatory reports; communicate effectively verbally, in the American Sign Language, and in writing; and establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in Rehabilitation, Education, Psychology or a related field and/or demonstrated experience in interpreting/transliterating in a supervisory capacity, National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification or national certification and State License.


Special Conditions of Employment


This position may be required to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends. National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification or national certification and State License. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
