Job Summary


Supervises and coordinates the daily operations of the library access services area including interlibrary loans and reserves, circulation, acquisitions and periodicals.  Performs basic computer assistance and technology troubleshooting.  Performs basic maintenance of the area and reference desk assistance.


Scope


This position works in the area of library services.  Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students and customers.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment.


Supervision Received


This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non-routine and highly sensitive matters.


Supervision Exercised


Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Library Assistant, Administrative Secretary, students, temporaries and/or other assigned staff.


Representative Duties


Supervises library services area personnel and oversees the daily operations of circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, periodicals, acquisitions and receiving; assists customers and solves day-to-day material access problems; instructs and assists customers on library technology, research and reference techniques; provides assistance and training to customers in computer areas on computer applications; trains student and temporary employees on access services and library/information center resource policies and procedures; troubleshoots and performs minor repairs for copiers, microfilm, computer software and hardware problems; secures copyright permissions and maintains copyright database of active permissions; may hire and supervise student employees and/or other staff; develops and assigns access services work schedules; assists in development of access services procedures; responsible for fine collection and management of monies related to fines; performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: a full range of library services, practices, policies and procedures; on-line library catalog and circulation modules; search techniques for on-line bibliographic databases and indexes; research methodology and techniques; various library equipment; standard financial record keeping practices; customer service techniques.


Ability to: organize and prioritize workload; solve word processing and software problems; troubleshoot and perform basic copier and microfilm machine repairs; oversee, direct and train assigned staff; coordinate library services and activities to meet day-to-day needs; learn new technologies; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree and/or experience in library science, technology or related field and/or experience in library service in a supervisory capacity.


Special Conditions of Employment


Some positions may require evening and weekend hours. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
