Job Summary


Directs and coordinates the enforcement of rules and regulations of the college to maintain order and ensure a safe environment for students, faculty, staff and general public. 

 

Scope


This position works in the area of Security.  Work contacts include administration, faculty, students, staff, the public, and external agencies.  Equipment used includes hand radios, base mobile unit, two‑wheel bikes, electric vehicles, security cardkey, computer equipment and typewriter. 

 

Supervision Received


This position reports to an administrator who is responsible for the area of Security; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and highly sensitive matters. 

 

Supervision Exercised


Supervises Security Officers, temporaries, and students. 

 

Representative Duties


Plans and organizes college security procedures; implements approved security methods and procedures; keeps abreast and implements federal, and local regulations; interprets security rules/regulations and directs subordinates in their enforcement; consults with district safety security advisor and outside sources for interpretation and application of relevant laws, security rules, and measures; hires, trains and evaluates staff; assigns staff to shifts and posts; coordinates the enforcement of traffic and parking regulations, issuance of citations and parking permits, collection of delinquent parking fines, purchase and installation of traffic signs; develops and implements crowd control procedures; performs emergency first aid according to federal and local standards; reports irregularities/problems to appropriate authorities; may patrol areas as required; cooperates with police, fire, and security authorities on cases and problems affecting the college; conducts investigations; writes reports and correspondence; maintains required record‑keeping system; lost and found; prepares and monitors budget; issues handicapped and faculty parking permits; performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: sound security practices; federal and local laws and regulations.

 

Ability to: learn, interpret, and communicate laws, regulations, and policies; supervise and train others; remain objective despite external pressures; communicate effectively and establish cooperative working relationships with law enforcement agencies and a wide variety of persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be college coursework in law enforcement administration, criminal justice or a related field and/or responsible experience in a security or law enforcement operation. 

 

Special Conditions of Employment


A valid Class D Arizona Drivers License is required. APOST certification required or ability to be APOST certified.

 

Working Conditions


Positions in this class may require that incumbents be on 24‑hour emergency call, stand and walk for extended periods of time; and lift up to 50 lb. objects.  Positions in this class do not carry weapons. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
