Job Summary
Plans, organizes and directs through assigned
groundskeepers, the horticulture development and maintenance of campus grounds
and other campus property.
Scope
This position works in the area of Maintenance and
Operations. Work contacts include
administrators, faculty, staff, students and the public. Equipment used includes power and hand
groundskeeping equipment, landscaping design/drafting equipment and various
motorized equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Director of Buildings and
Grounds; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and
specific instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Directs the work of assigned groundskeepers, students and
temporaries.
Representative Duties
Plans, schedules and directs the planting, cultivation,
propagation and care of turf, shrubs, flowers and trees; directs the
application of fertilizer, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and assures the
proper and timely completion of planned activities; plans and directs the
horticulture development of campus grounds; guides and gives technical
assistance to groundskeepers in the performance of their assigned duties;
supervises work in progress to insure that proper and satisfactory horticulture
methods, work schedules, safety and other standards are being maintained;
instructs, demonstrates and trains groundskeeping staff in proper horticulture
methods, techniques, use of equipment, plant insects, disease identification
and treatment; develops and prepares cost estimates of requested or planned
horticultural and/or landscaping projects as required; prepares and maintains
records and reports; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: horticulture, landscaping, and groundkeeping
techniques.
Ability to: direct and train landscaping staff; plan and
perform a variety of horticulture and landscape functions; interpret and follow
State and Federal regulations on various sprays and chemicals; communicate
effectively orally and in writing and establish cooperative working
relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned
duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in Horticulture, Landscape
Architect or related field and/or experience as a project manager on a variety
of landscaping projects.
Special Conditions of Employment
State of Arizona Class D Driver's license.
Working Conditions
Positions in this class may be required to lift up to 50‑lb
objects; frequent bending, stooping, and walking, exposure to a variety of
weather conditions for extended periods of time; exposure to substance which
may present health hazards if not handled properly.
