Job Summary


Directs the support services and resources for students with disabilities to ensure equal access as identified under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.


Scope


This position works in the area of student services.  Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students, public and private high schools, rehabilitation centers and other community and government agencies.  Equipment used includes visual‑tek, Perkins Brailer, enlarged print, talking calculator, TTY, FM Hearing Amplification System, tape recorders, scanners assistive technology software and equipment and standard office equipment.


Supervision Received


This position reports to an assigned administrator responsible for the area; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.


Supervision Exercised


Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Coordinator Interpreting Services/Interpreter for the Deaf, Program Advisor, Student Services Specialist, Administrative Secretary, Sign Language and/or Oral Interpreters, Tutors, Readers, Note Takers, and other assigned staff.


Representative Duties


Manages the department responsible for the individual programs, services and technology for disabled students; evaluates assistive technology and other resources; maintains student confidentiality while coordinating the student's accommodations; assists students with implementing individualized plan of study; evaluates medical and other documentation to determine qualifying status of students with disabilities requesting reasonable accommodations; provides special accommodations, support services and auxiliary aids; provides in-service training for faculty, staff, administrators and students; responds to inquiries requiring a detailed knowledge of policies and procedures of assigned area; establishes liaison between the colleges and community agencies; serves on disability, college recruitment and orientation committees; provides orientation, recruitment and retention services; follows disability regulations such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); tracks and monitors federal grants; prepares and monitors department budget and other related budgets; collects and compiles data for federal and state reports; provides academic advisement and registration assistance; implements reasonable and appropriate accommodations based on documentation of disability provided by qualified diagnosticians; hires, supervises and trains staff; performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: federal and state guidelines and regulations; grant management; community agencies/resources available to students with disabilities; community college philosophy; sensitive issues related to disability service.


Ability to: coordinate reasonable accommodations; conduct grant management; interpret policies and procedures; supervise staff; advocate for students with disabilities; work with community agencies; develop brochures and materials; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in special education or related field and/or experience in special education, rehabilitation or areas which serve special needs.


Special Conditions of Employment


Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
