Job Summary


Organizes and produces news, information and public affairs programs for the station.


Scope


This position works in the area of KJZZ Radio Station. Work contacts include administrators, staff, business, government, educational, public and private groups.  Equipment used includes cassette and reel‑to‑reel recorders, head and microphones, tape machines, patch panels, graphic and parametric equalizers, turntables, audio control consoles and standard office equipment.


Supervision Received


This position reports to the Program Director; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine matters. 


Supervision Exercised


May direct work of interns and volunteers.


Representative Duties


Produces, directs and monitors news and documentary programs; produces and directs public affairs programming and promotional programs; develops and maintains liaison with community service groups, business professional, educational, government, public and private groups; serves as talent/newscaster/announcer as necessary; writes and edits news, narrations, and wraparounds; operates all studio remote broadcast equipment; edits audio tapes; assists in community ascertainment as required by the Federal Communications Commission; supervises and trains students and volunteer help in production; recommends new program ideas and packages; creates and assists the National Public Radio in the production of programs for national distribution; assists in budget planning; creates format changes in news areas; provides post‑production services for non‑news activities; performs related duties as assigned. 


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: audio equipment; FCC rules and regulations;


Ability to: produce and direct programs; organize work schedule; type; prepare broadcasts; supervise and train students; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in Broadcasting and/or experience in broadcasting, news, public affairs, writing.  Network level production experience preferred.


Special Conditions of Employment


Classification requires that incumbents be available to work flexible hours.  Incumbent must possess FCC license with broadcast endorsement. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
