TITLE: SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

Job Summary


Performs a wide range of advanced professional level accounting work of a varied nature within assigned areas of financial responsibility for the district.


Scope


This position works in the area of Business Services. Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, professional organizations, public entities, and vendors. Equipment used includes standard office equipment.


Supervision Received


This position reports to an assigned administrator or Principal Accountant. Receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters, specific instruction regarding non-routine and highly sensitive matters.


Supervision Exercised


May supervise the work of Level I and II Accountants, Accounting Assistants, staff and temporaries.


Representative Duties


Analyzes records of expenditures and encumbrances and recommends necessary changes; checks and verifies the accuracy and completeness of budgetary accounting records; prepares budget documents such as updated estimates, base requests and budget adjustments; reviews and maintains general and subsidiary ledgers; reviews and updates complete set of accrual books of account and analyzes related financial statements; consults with and advises departments and colleges on recording transactions and fiscal record; conducts training for users regarding accounting procedures and related system's processes; instructs employees on technical accounting, taxation and reporting and the interpretation and application of related rules and regulations; reads and interprets contents of legal agreements and compliance requirements as they pertain to accounting and tax issues; provides assistance district wide on accounting issues related to various activities, such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants, property, and tax accounting, reporting, and budgeting; evaluates and recommends revisions to accounting procedures and processes; demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes; works cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service; supervises assigned staff; performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting and Auditing Standards (GAAS), theory, and practices; budget and grant administration; tax laws and their application to various accounting transactions and reporting; office management principles and practices; on-line general ledger software; spreadsheet applications.


Ability to: instruct internal and external customers on policies and procedures; translate complex customer needs into detailed specifications; perform and review mathematical and statistical calculations; produce written documentation such as financial statements and reports; apply sound critical judgement in complex situations; prepare and analyze comprehensive financial reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships; analyze and interpret fiscal, budget and, accounting records; coordinate workflow; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field and/or professional experience in accounting or auditing. Exposure to governmental accounting and computerized accounting systems is desired and C.P.A certification and supervisory experience is preferred.


Special Conditions of Employment


Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
