Job Summary
Develops, coordinates and implements programs to meet the
unique needs of Native American students.
Scope
This position works in area of student services. Work contacts include administrators,
faculty, staff, the public, including Native American tribal agencies and
communities. Equipment used includes
standard office equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
general directions regarding routine and standard matters; specific
instructions regarding non‑routine and highly sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on
location/department, may supervise program advisors, students and temporaries.
Representative Duties
Administers the Native American Program and coordinates
linkages with programs and services to meet the students unique educational
needs; works closely with the college counseling center to facilitate referral
systems, consultative arrangements, tutorial and testing services; assists
students with social, personal, financial and career advisement; assesses needs
of the Native American community in cooperation with other offices, e.g.,
research and development, and special student services; organizes, meets, and
receives recommendations from, local advisory committees; consults with
appropriate chairpersons and college administrators regarding the development
of courses, curriculum and services for Native American students;
recommends and implements in‑service
training for instructors, staff and administrators working with Native American
students; evaluates goals, objectives and outcomes of the Native American
Program; interacts with appropriate agencies as a college representative
responsible for working with Native American students; serves as a member of
college and/or District committees as assigned; performs other duties as
assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge
of: Native American people, history, culture, values and contemporary issues;
federal, state, and tribal agencies concerned with Native American education,
including tribal financial aid procedures.
Ability
to: develop and administer the Native American Program; work with Native
American organizations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; promote
intercultural communication; establish cooperative working relationships with
persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree with coursework in
community service, higher education, rehabilitation, guidance or counseling and/or
administrative experience in areas related to special needs. Demonstrated
involvement in Native American communities and organizations preferred.
