Job Summary
Coordinates the operation of college computer services
including both administrative and instructional applications involving
microcomputer and mainframe equipment.
Scope
This position works in the area of Computer Services. Work contacts include administrators,
faculty, staff and students. Equipment
used includes computer terminals, micro computers, electronic multi-meter and
printers.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions
regarding non‑routine and highly sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Supervises Computer Operator I, II, Computer Services Lab
Technician, Computer Maintenance Technician, Data Processing Lab Technicians,
students and temporaries.
Representative Duties
Monitors large‑scale computer‑aided instruction;
supervises computer operator/lab technicians in the operation of instructional
computer laboratories and the mainframe computer system; coordinates the
scheduling of computer laboratory activities; makes recommendations on
equipment and software purchases, physical arrangement of laboratory space,
record keeping systems; coordinates the distribution and installation of
computer equipment; sets‑up and maintains computer equipment; writes
programs to meet user needs; schedules batch job production; confers with users
as needed; recommends equipment and software purchases; recommends physical
arrangement of laboratory space, and record keeping systems; lays cable;
prepares computer usage reports, supply requisitions; maintains software
checkout records; maintains inventory control; assists in the preparation of
computer services budgets; provides technical assistance in the planning and
implementation of computer information systems and telecommunications; performs
related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge of:
operation of computer systems; equipment installation and maintenance.
Ability
to: read and interpret technical manuals and specifications; operate mainframe
and micro‑computers including mainframe batch mode operations and on‑line
operations; organize workflow; direct the work of others; maintain records;
communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working
relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned
duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in Computer Sciences,
Electronics or a related field and/or responsible experience in the operation,
installation, and maintenance of computer systems, along with user interaction.
Special Conditions of Employment
Working Conditions
Positions in this class may be required to lift up to 50‑lb
objects and crawl through cramped areas to lay cable.
