Job Summary
Responsible for the design, development, organization,
installation and assessment of database management system software,
applications and database environments.
Scope
This position works in the area of information
technology. Work contacts include
administrators, faculty, staff and vendors.
Equipment used includes standard
office equipment and a variety of computer hardware and software.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions
regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.

None.
Representative Duties
Develops, installs, monitors, updates and batches custom
database applications using enterprise versions of Oracle, Peoplesoft, Sybase,
Informix or MS/SQL; designs and implements database and operating system
security for client and server configurations; plans for capacity and growth of
new and ongoing systems; resolves database problems; analyses data requirements
from functional specifications; maintains and coordinates data models,
dictionaries and other database documentation; administers database systems
including monitoring and maintaining database systems and performing tuning and
testing; analyzes performance of database systems and maintains file
structures; works with end users to fix bugs; consults on database design; coordinates
changes to database architecture; coordinates database system performance and
space use; develops and implements external access to transactions with
database systems using application programming interfaces (API) object‑oriented
language (OO) macros, script/batch language interfaces (e.g., Perl, Tickle,
Awk) and electronic commerce solutions; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge
of: current enterprise style database versions of Oracle, Peoplesoft Sybase,
Informix, Structured Query Language (SQL) or MS/SQL; database design and
database development tools; relational database structure and data
normalization; operating systems (i.e., Novell, Windows NT, Unix, VMS);
client/server architecture design and implementation; database system
installation and maintenance; world wide web (WWW) interfaces to database
systems; database security design and implementation; C, C++, Perl, Java and
GCI programming.
Ability
to: develop, implement and maintain database applications and systems;
interpret documentation and manuals; document database models and data
structures; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish
cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of
performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college coursework in information
technology with specialized courses in database design and development. Vendor certification or training in the
following software products Oracle, Peoplesoft, Informix or Sybase (enterprise
versions) preferred. Experience in
developing conceptual data models from analysis of business processes and user
needs as well as experience in the design, development and implementation of
relational database solutions.

Positions in this class may
require prolonged monitor viewing. After‑hours and weekend work may
be required. On‑call via phone
and/or pager is required.
