TITLE: INFORMATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATOR

Job Summary

 

Designs, implements and troubleshoots various security system software and hardware in a Unix, Windows, Linux, Networking, Oracle and SQL Server environment. Responsible for proactive monitoring of incident intrusion prevention/detection. Provides technical assistance during information security incidents and reports on those findings.

 

Scope

 

This position works in the area of information technology.  Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, vendors and manufacturers.  Equipment used includes microcomputers, servers, network switches, communications software/hardware and test equipment.

 

Supervision Received

 

This position reports to the Director Information Technology; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and highly sensitive matters.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

Depending on location/department, may direct the work of assigned staff.

 

Representative Duties

 

Responsible for the technical research, implementation and design of information technologies security systems; provides technical leadership, expertise and education working with technical staff for inclusion of information security throughout system design and development; performs security assessments of districtwide enterprise information technologies systems; evaluates Internet-wide security threats in relation to local systems; assists in applying best practices in securing enterprise data and information systems district-wide; assists the Director Information Technology in the development of information technologies security strategy, architecture and policies; proactively monitors security levels of information system technologies districtwide; works with external law enforcement, Legal Services, Human Resources and Internal Audit as necessary to provide technical expertise and assistance concerning information security incidents; works with outside vendors; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: application development methodologies, complex programming languages, database administration, networking principles and architecture, information technologies security software and hardware.

 

Ability to: analyze, diagnose and correct problems related to information technologies security systems; research, recommend, design and implement security solutions; assist technical staff in designing and implementing security software and hardware; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience

 

Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in computer science and/or experience in implementing information security technical solutions in a complex enterprise computing environment.

Working Conditions

 

Positions in the class may require prolonged monitor viewing. On-call via phone and/or pager is required. After-hours and weekend work may be required.
