Job Summary
Manages the design, installation and maintenance of the
digital network and other local data communication networks.
Scope
This position works in the area of information
technologies. Work contacts include
administrators, staff, outside vendors and manufactures. Equipment used includes standard office
equipment, computer terminals, diagnostics computers, network management
workstations, data communications equipment, digital microwave radios, and
specialized test equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions
regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on
location/department, may supervise staff and direct the work of technical
staff; may provide technical advice to users.
Representative Duties
Manages the
installations, operation and maintenance of digital network and local area
networks at a college location; monitors network activity using specialized
hardware and software to ensure maximum efficiency and minimum down time;
analyzes networking needs and requirements; develops and installs local
networks to meet college needs; provides technical support (product
recommendation and configuration); resolves customer workstation and software
problems; implements end user network services (printing, end user accounts)
and maintains network and peripherals; develops and manages network security;
resolves network performance issues; analyzes complex data using a variety of
network management software tools; documents installation and maintenance of
software, devices, and end-user devices; performs repairs to computer equipment
and associated peripherals; prepares and disseminates reports on activities of
area; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge
of: network server environment; network security; network operating systems;
data communication; network management hardware and software tools; District
operations; local area network installation and configuration; educational and
administrative computer applications.
Ability
to: analyze, diagnose and correct problems related to the network; maintain and
repair computer equipment; analyze network hardware needs at the college and
recommend solutions; analyze complex data and prepare reports on network
efficiency and other statistics; communicate effectively orally and in writing;
establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the
course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in information technology
or related field and/or experience in networking. Vendor certification
preferred.

Working Conditions
Positions
in this class may be exposed to cold temperatures; may be required to lift up
to 50‑lb objects; may have to crawl in small cramped spaces; may require prolonged monitor viewing; may work weekends
or evenings. On‑call availability via phone or beeper is required.
