Job Summary
Installs, maintains, and administrates client services to
include: computer software, hardware, peripherals and applications for use in
server and workstation environments.
Plans, coordinates and configures the installation of various system
hardware and software. Provides technical development in the LAN/WAN arena.
Scope
This position works in the area of Information Technology
Services. Work contacts include
administrators, faculty, professionals, staff and vendors. Equipment used includes a full range of
computer equipment, computer test equipment and software.
Supervision Received
This position reports to assigned administrators; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific
instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Supervises the work of Systems Engineer apprentices, and
provides work direction to Computer Maintenance Technicians, Network
Technicians, Computer Operators, students and temporaries.
Representative Duties
Designs and configures local area networks servers and
workstations; provides technical support (product recommendation and
configuration); resolves customer workstation and software problems; configures
local area network servers and workstations; installs network and workstation
operating systems; implements end user network services (i.e. printing, user
accounts); installs and maintains network and computer peripherals (e.g.
printers, modems, or related equipment); documents installation and maintenance
of software, devices, and end‑user services; interfaces with staff
assigned to applications development to maintain familiarity with application
development; performs connection of workstations of networks to the network;
troubleshoots hardware, software and network connectivity problems; performs
repairs to computer equipment and associated peripherals; performs basic workstation
training; interacts with network and technical operations staff; interacts with
software library to ensure proper licensed application policy and procedures
are adhered to; supervises assigned staff; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge
of: network server environment also server and support requirements; District's
operations; computer hardware and software for large computer systems,
microcomputers, personal computers and workstations; educational and administrative
computer applications; local area networks; major network operating systems;
networked workstation attachment, installation and configuration.
Ability
to: create and implement customer projects; interpret documentation and
manuals; develop designs for server and workstation configuration; maintain and
repair computer equipment; supervise assigned staff; make oral presentations;
communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish cooperative working
relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned
duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree Computer Information
Systems with specialized courses in electronics, and microcomputer technical
training. Vendor certifications in the
following hardware groups (IBM, Compaq, HP, Cisco, Dell, NEC). Certification in
two of the major network operating systems (Novell, Microsoft, Linux) with experience
in WAN, operating system application software installation, on‑site
technical service, customer interface and network installation support. MCSE
and one major operating system certification required.
Special Conditions of Employment
Vendor certifications in the following hardware groups (IBM,
Compaq, HP, Cisco, Dell, NEC). Certification in two of the major network
operating systems (Novell, Microsoft, Linux). MCSE and one major operating
system certification required.
Working Conditions
After‑hours and weekend work may be required. On‑call via phone and/or beeper is
required.
