Job Summary


Provides all broadcast engineering services for the stations, including planning, maintenance, and emergency services.

 

Scope


This position works in the area of KJZZ/KBAQ and Sun Sounds.  Work contacts include administrators, staff, students, temporaries, volunteers, National Public Radio network, other broadcasters and government as well as private agencies.  Equipment used includes broadcast studio technology (analog & digital), program distribution (analog & digital), inter-connective systems (analog & digital) and RF transmission systems (analog & digital with IBOC HD).

 

Supervision Received


This position reports to the General Manager KJZZ/KBAQ/Sun Sounds; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific instructions regarding non‑routine matters.

 

Supervision Exercised


Supervises assigned staff.

 

Representative Duties


Prepares and administers preventive maintenance schedule for all studio, program distribution, remote, inter-connective and transmission equipment; recommends immediate and long range equipment needs; maintains and certifies engineering logs and other records required by the Federal Communications Commission; provides on-call services for emergency equipment failures; represents KJZZ/KBAQ/SS at professional meetings; monitors the stations to insure that technical performance meets the standards of the FCC and the Maricopa Community Colleges; prepares technical portions of grant proposals for station projects and FCC applications; maintains property control files and records; supervises and administers technical aspects of translator operations and SCA operations; works with infrastructure service providers to provide required stations services; maintains liaison with National Public Radio with regard to satellite and other network considerations; responsible for the proper operations and maintenance of satellite receiving equipment; performs repair work on malfunctioning equipment; assists in the preparation of operating and capital equipment budgets; performs engineering related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: public telecommunication laws; technical operations of a radio stations including studio program distribution, inter-connective systems, translator stations, microwave and satellite systems.

 

Ability to: maintain compliance with FCC rules and regulations; train and supervise staff; solve technical and programmatic emergencies; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in electronics or related field and/or experience in studio, transmitter translator maintenance in a supervisory capacity.

 

Special Conditions of Employment


On call 24 hours.

 

Working Conditions


Position in this class may require lifting up to 50‑lb. objects; may require prolonged standing, lifting, bending for extended periods of time. Some positions may require a Class D Driver's License.
