Job Summary

 

Creates, develops, budgets, coordinates, implements and supervises the college's marketing, advertising and public relations programs, including print, broadcast and all media and community relations.

 

Scope

 

This position works in an assigned area. Work contacts include administrators, staff, students, Governing Board members, vendors, media representatives, other educational institutions, community members, alumni and foundation staff.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment.

 

Supervision Received

 

This position reports to a College President or administrator; receives general and specific direction from other administrators as well.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Coordinator Alumni & Community Relations, Coordinator Marketing & Public Relations, Public Relations Assistant, Graphic Designer, Administrative Secretary and/or other assigned staff and students.

 

Representative Duties

 

Plans and implements the college's marketing programs to parallel the goals and mission of the District and the college; supervises and coordinates advertising, public relations and distribution of schedules; plans, writes and distributes news releases; arranges for interviews with personnel on print and broadcast media and for special events; writes speeches; acts as spokesperson to the media; participates in appropriate committees; acts as liaison with the media; writes and/or supervises the concepts for advertising copy; coordinates printing projects; receives and disseminates ongoing computer education; supervises photography commissioned by or taking place on site; maintains liaison with District and MCCCD colleges' public relations personnel; may update telephone directory and on‑hold information; plans and coordinates special events; maintains contact with the community and businesses; works with other departments to promote the District or college assists management in determining the department's objectives and budget planning; administers and monitors the budget; works with management in promoting specific academic and occupational programs; photographs students and others for publications; may supervise electronic and other signage; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: principles, practices and ethics of public relations; principles of institutional advancement; media relations; print, electronic and miscellaneous media requirements for bilingual advertising and publicity; graphic design, type and layout for publications; computer equipment and software; creative community (photographers, graphics experts, printers); special event planning and management; budget management.

 

Ability to: supervise assigned staff; work within an established budget; seek and develop opportunities to enhance the District or college's reputation; develop and coordinate activities which meet the goals and missions of the District and the college; assess organizational needs and establish priorities; communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships.

 

Training and Experience

 

Any combination of education, training experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a degree in journalism, marketing or liberal arts and/or extensive experience in marketing, public relations, special events, graphic design, photography and printing, with demonstrated people skills and expertise in planning, writing, editing, designing, production methods, media relations, management, crisis media management and organizational development.

 

Special Conditions of Employment

 

Working hours may include evenings, holidays or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events.
