Job Summary
Directs research activities for evaluating college-wide
institutional effectiveness.
Scope
This position works in an assigned area. Work contacts
include administrators, faculty, staff and other educational institutions and
government agencies. Equipment used includes standard office equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
broad direction as to the goals and objectives to be achieved; receives general
direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions
regarding non‑routine and sensitive matter.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on
location/department, may supervise the
positions of Institutional Research Analyst,
Research Assistant and/or other assigned staff.
Representative Duties
Designs, plans, directs and evaluates the research
activities which impact institutional research and effectiveness and student
outcomes assessment; designs strategic and operational planning processes;
provides research support for strategic, budget and operational planning
activities; directs the college's institutional research agenda; plans for
collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data on institutional
effectiveness, with special focus on student outcomes assessment according to
NCA criteria and MCCCD goals; collects and analyzes data and develops reports
to aid program evaluation and decision making for college operations and
budgeting; directs partnership development activities of the college for
pertinent projects; conducts complex statistical analysis; develops and
maintains liaison with district, local, state and national research, planning
and development networks and organizations; creates database and computer
support systems to support decision making for institutional effectiveness;
participates in appropriate committees and meetings; may supervise assigned
staff; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: theory and practice of institutional
effectiveness research and student outcomes assessment; educational research
design and techniques; policy issues in higher education as related to teaching
and learning theory, practice and higher education planning; program and
partnership development.
Ability to: assess college research needs; plan, organize,
implement and evaluate responsive research; manage and/or serve on diverse
committees; coordinate activities and work of others; supervise and evaluate
staff; make effective oral and written presentations; analyze data, assess
needs, diagnose problems; design and perform research activities; create
databases and computer support systems; communicate effectively orally and in
writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in
the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in education, research or a
related field, with experience in community college management, research or
educational development.
