Job Summary
Plans, designs and directs a comprehensive student leadership program, student governance, student activities and special events for the college. Directs, coordinates and develops specific student athletic programs and coordinates the administrative and marketing programs which support the athletic programs.
Scope
This position works in the area of student services. Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students, local school districts, governmental agencies and the public. Equipment used includes standard office equipment, audiovisual equipment, handicap equipment, and athletic equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives general direction regarding routine matters and specific instructions regarding non-routine matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on location/department, may supervise the
positions of Program Advisors, Office Coordinator, Administrative Secretary,
Athletic Specialist and/or other assigned staff, coaches, students and
temporaries in ongoing and special athletics programs, projects and events.
Representative Duties
Develops and implements specific athletic programs; directs
and coordinates a full range of athletic department services and programs;
advises other college personnel in planning programs and services; participates
on college and District committees and task forces related to athletics;
supervises utilization of the athletic facilities; recommends and reviews
policies for student and community use of facilites at the college; in
consultation with instructional personnel, coordinates athletic uses of training
and weight room facilities; reviews and recommends changes, repairs and
improvement of athletic equipment and facilities; arranges for athletic events
(game management); oversees the production of athletics handbooks, bulletins
and other publications; coordinatres master athletic calendars; works with
college marketing and public relations department to arrange for marketing of
athletic programs; coordinates college vehicles for athletics travel, insurance
claim processing, concession procedures; develops and provides a variety of
student services and programs such as student athletic recruitment and
retention, academic tracking, athletic eligibility, health and safety; makes
recommendations in matters of student athlete discipline; facilitates programs for
student athletes; provides athlete and coach orientation, conditioning and
athletics training programs; develops athletics budget; reviews and controls
expenditures from athletic accounts; provides leadership for fund raising
activities; may present workshops and seminars related to the athletics;
advises students in eligibility and academic issues; attends athletic
events/competitions; supervises full and part time coaches and staff; provides
liaison with community, state and conference organizations related to
athletics; prepares reports and proposals; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: student leadership/development theory and
practices; student governance; special funding guidelines and regulations
applicable to program; conflict resolution and crisis intervention techniques;
federal, state and local policies and procedures; current practices in the
delivery of athletic programs at post-secondary institutions; student athletic
issues; supervision techniques; basic budgeting and financial record-keeping
and control procedures; NJCAA rules and practices; sport procedures and
practices.
Ability to: plan, organize and manage multiple activities;
develop and monitor budgets; supervise the work of others; coordinate divers
student programs; plan, develop and implement new programs and services;
integrate multiple activities and programs around the goals of the athletics
program; participate with other personnel in developing and coordinating
activities, goals, and services; develop and provide athletic services to meet
the needs of a wide variety of student athletes; supervise and train students
and staff in a variety of labor intensive activities; communicate effectively
orally and in writing; and establish cooperative working relationships with
persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training, and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in social and behavioral
science or related field and/or administrative experience in the management of
student services functions, exercise science, athletics administration, or a
related field and/or demonstrated experiences in program development and
coordination of athletics or a related activity.

This position may require extended/flexible hours.
