Job Summary


Responsible for the development, installation, testing, administration, and documentation of enterprise server application software, including server and client components.

 

Scope


This position works in the area of information technology.  Work contacts may include administrators, faculty, professionals, staff and vendors. Equipment used includes a wide range of computer equipment and software. 

 

Supervision Received


This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.

 

Supervision Exercised


Depending on location/department, may direct computer staff.

 

Representative Duties


Develops, manages, tests and provides support to multiple enterprise‑wide software applications and servers; designs, recommends, installs and supports enterprise-wide computing systems, and related infrastructure, e.g., Calendar, E-mail, LDAP, Crystal Enterprise, PeopleSoft Portal, and Blackboard; performs system interaction design and develops policies, procedures and standards related to the development and maintenance of server applications; implements application security for client and server configurations; identifies, recommends and implements appropriate design tools and methodologies; analyzes server requirements from functional specifications; develops, maintains and implements application documentation standards; consults on server application design; coordinates changes to server applications, including upgrades, patches and fixes; trains staff to perform technical, support or configuration functions on server and client software, and provides staff cross-training to support and maintain applications; assists, trains, and advises users; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: C++, Visual Basic, Perl, sieve and/or custom API programming languages; HTML, SQL, JavaScript, and/or Perl scripting, markup, query and control; PeopleSoft application development; LDAP database; relational database structure and data normalization for proprietary database (e.g., proprietary e-mail system); operating systems (e.g., VAX/VMS, Windows, UNIX, Solaris, Mac); networking services and protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, SSL, FTP, Telnet, and LDAP); world wide web (WWW) interfaces to database applications; application level security implementation.

 

Ability to: develop, test, document, implement and maintain server system applications; manage projects; interpret documentation and manuals; supervise assigned staff; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in information technology, computer science, software engineering or decision support systems with specialized courses in application design methodologies, tools and development, and/or related experience.

 

 

Special Conditions of Employment


Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.

 

Working Conditions


Positions in this class may require prolonged monitor viewing.  After‑hours and weekend work may be required. On‑call via phone and/or page is required.
