Job Summary
Responsible for the development, installation, testing,
administration, and documentation of enterprise server software, including
operating systems, shared components, networking and application level
protocols.
Scope
This position works in the area of information
technology. Work contacts may include administrators, faculty,
professionals, staff and vendors. Equipment used includes a wide range of
computer equipment and software.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives
general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions
regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on location/department, may direct computer staff.
Representative Duties
Develops, manages, tests and provides support to multiple
enterprise‑wide systems and servers; designs, recommends, installs and
supports enterprise-wide computing systems, and related infrastructure, e.g.,
Active Directory, BIND, CIFS, NFS; performs system interaction design and
develops policies, procedures and standards related to the development and
maintenance of systems; implements security for server protection and client
access; identifies, recommends and implements appropriate design tools and
methodologies; analyzes server requirements from functional specifications;
develops, maintains and implements application documentation standards;
consults on server application design; coordinates changes to server
applications, including upgrades, patches and fixes; trains staff to perform
technical, support or configuration functions on servers, and provides staff
cross-training to support and maintain systems; assists, trains, and advises
users; performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: common server hardware architecture including
servers (CPU, bus, memory), SANS, disk arrays, network hardware. Understanding of: Operating Systems (e.g.,
Windows, UNIX, Solaris, VAX/VMS), including processes, files, memory management
and I/O systems; distributed information systems including 2 and 3 tier
designs, and web based systems; networking services and protocols (e.g.,
TCP/IP, SSL, FTP, Telnet, LDAP); world wide web interfaces to database
applications; systems level security implementation. Understanding of IP
networking, basic routing, TCP ports and network services, including SSH, LDAP,
SFTP and HTTP(S).
Ability to: implement change control and configuration
management, patch management, high availability systems, structured design and
support methodologies; implement server security including packet filtering,
access control, cryptography, and common security practices; program system
support tasks in C, Java, Perl, batch/shell, or other general purpose
programming language; perform complex performance analysis including system
processes, I/O subsystems, networks and other related components; manage troubleshooting
processes across different technical teams.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities. An example of this would
be a college degree in information technology, computer science, CIS, and/or
related experience.

Working Conditions
Positions in this class may require prolonged monitor
viewing. After‑hours and weekend work may be required. On‑call
via phone and/or page is required.
