Job Summary
Manages and
coordinates a district or college computer operations center, including local
area networks, server systems, database administration and disaster
recovery/backup systems.
Scope
This position works in the
area of information technology and is responsible for the performance of the
computing operations. Work contacts
include administrators, staff and vendors.
Equipment used includes standard office equipment and a variety of
computer hardware and software.

This position
reports to an assigned administrator; receives general direction regarding
routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine
matters.

Depending on
location/department, may supervise the positions of Supervisor Computer Lab,
Lead Computer Operator, Computer Operator, Computer Repair Technician, Computer
Maintenance Technician, Help Desk Analyst, Programmer, Network Services
Technician, Network Technician,
Systems Administrator and/or other assigned staff.
Representative
Duties
Plans, manages and
coordinates computer operations production, maintenance and schedules; reviews
and evaluates operations personnel performance; organizes or schedules to meet
deadlines; monitors operations of computer systems at central sites; may
direct, plan and supervise account administration for enterprise-wide systems;
assists and provides advice on college computer operations; prepares reports
and future projections for reporting and budget purposes; assists in budget
preparations; provides technical advice in equipment evaluation, selection and
installation; maintains accurate records on equipment utilization; reviews and
implements operations procedures and techniques to improve efficiency of staff
and equipment; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; supervises and
trains staff; maintains liaison with vendors; coordinates equipment receipt and
installation; responsible for disaster recovery implementation; performs
related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and
Abilities
Knowledge of:
methods, practices and terminology used in data processing and/or computer
systems; computer equipment evaluation and installation; supervision and
management practices.
Ability to:
supervise, train and evaluate a computer operations staff; organize work
schedules to meet deadlines; interpret software documentation; communicate
effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships
with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and
Experience
Any combination of
education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and
abilities. An example of this would be
a college degree in information technology and/or experience in computer
operations or computer systems in a supervisory capacity.
