Job Summary

 

Responsible for the organization, installation and maintenance of enterprise database management system software, multiple applications and multiple database environments including hardware, network and interface implications.

 

Scope

 

This position works in the area of information technology.  Work contacts include administrators, professionals, staff and vendors.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment and a variety of computer hardware and software.

 

Supervision Received

 

This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Database Administrator, External Consultants and/or other assigned staff.

 

Representative Duties

 

Plans and coordinates database applications, installations and upgrades using enterprise versions of relational or object oriented database management systems; develops policies and procedures related to the support and maintenance of database applications; designs and implements database and operating security systems; plans for capacity, growth and upgrading of new and ongoing systems; serves as primary focal point for resolving enterprise database problems; maintains and coordinates data models, dictionaries and other database documentation; administers, monitors, maintains and performs tuning and testing of multiple database applications; consults on database design and access; coordinates changes to database architecture; coordinates database system performance and space use; monitors and manages external access to and transactions with database systems; trains staff to support and maintain database systems; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: Oracle, OLA, Kronos, Peoplesoft or other enterprise database management system; Structured Query Language (SQL) or MS/SQL; database design and database development tools; relational database structure and data normalization; operating systems (i.e., Novell, Windows NT, UNIX, VMS); client/server architecture design and implementation; database system installation and maintenance; world wide web (WWW) interfaces to database systems; database security design and implementation; C, C++, Perl, Java and CGI programming.

 


Ability to: implement and maintain enterprise database applications and systems; effectively manage projects, priorities and resources; interpret documentation and manuals; document database models and data structures; supervise assigned staff; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience

 

Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be specialized courses in database design and development. Experience in the design, development, implementation, maintenance and management of enterprise relational database solutions. Vendor certification or training in the following software products: Oracle, Informix, or Sybase (enterprise versions) preferred.

Positions in this class may require prolonged monitor viewing. After‑hours and weekend work may be required. On‑call via phone and/or pager is required.
