TITLE: DIRECTOR FACILITIES

Job Summary

 

Provides general management and professional direction for comprehensive facilities management that includes facilities maintenance and repairs, facilities renovation and major maintenance, utilities distribution, custodial, landscaping and other maintenance services to the assigned college and/or multiple campuses.

 

Scope

 

This position works in the area of maintenance and operations or building and grounds.  Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students, government agencies, general public, contractors and vendors, such as architects, engineers, consultants and suppliers.  Equipment used includes drafting equipment and standard office.

 

Supervision Received

 

This position reports to an assigned administrator who has overall responsibility for maintenance and operations of one or more facilities; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific instructions regarding non‑routine and highly sensitive matters.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

Depending on location/department, may supervise the positions of Custodian, Groundskeeper, Electrician, Carpenter, Plumber, Utility Worker, HVAC Technician, Facilities Technician, Coordinator Ground Maintenance, Maintenance Supervisor, clerical staff and/or other assigned staff.  May oversee the work of outside contractors.

 

Representative Duties

 

Manages the maintenance and operation of the college/multicampus facilities, grounds, mechanical equipment and utilities distribution; provides technical direction to college/multicampuses; develops and controls department budget; oversees building and grounds remodeling and major maintenance projects; develops and administers departmental policies and procedures; manages and evaluates assigned staff; develops, plans and initiates physical plant maintenance and repair projects; makes accommodations for accessibility; initiates and approves requisitions for purchase of materials, supplies and contractor's services; coordinates construction activities with district staff and contractors; maintains liaison with architects, engineers and contractors engaged in construction, renovation or other major projects; maintains records and files; develops controls and procedures to promote facilities management and work production; develops and coordinates preventative maintenance programs, energy conservation programs and M&O/Crafts training programs; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: all phases of physical plant operation, maintenance and repair; planning, scheduling, management and administration of the physical plant; federal, state and local regulations and safety practices; record keeping and report writing.

 

 

Ability to: read blueprints; manage, plan and administer a plant operation and program; direct the work of others; maintain operating costs and other records; prepare necessary operation and progress reports; oversee planning for repairs, alterations and construction, equipment, grounds and landscaping; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience

 

Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in engineering, architecture or business and/or experience in physical plant/facilities management in a supervisory capacity.

 

Special Conditions of Employment

 

This position is on 24‑hour emergency call. OSHA Certification required within 1 year of employment.

 

Working Conditions

 

Positions in this class may require strenuous lifting of 50 pounds, bending, climbing, etc.
