Job Summary
Develops, plans, directs and implements all aspects of the
Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technology Department.
Scope
This position works in the areas of Emergency Medical
Technology and Fire Science. Work
contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, students, personnel clinical
agencies, local, state, and national EMS and Fire Technologies communities,
private industry representatives and the public. Equipment used includes standard office equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to an assigned Vice President;
receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific
instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on
location/department, may supervise the positions of Coordinator Fire Science/EMT,
Emergency Medical/Fire Lab Technician, Coordinator Law Enforcement Training,
Administrative Secretary and/or assigned staff.
Representative Duties
Administers and supervises the development, implementation
and evaluation of curriculum of fire science and EMT programs; upgrades
curriculum and teaching materials required by state and federal regulations for
Emergency Medical Technology and Fire Science programs; advises students with
regard to career planning, personal and health concerns; investigates, mediates
and resolves student and/or faculty problems; initiates, facilitates and maintains
liaison with community regulatory agencies, educational programs and advisory
committees; plans and schedules clinical experiences; directs recruitment,
screening and recommendation of faculty and staff; implements the evaluation
and retention process; coordinates faculty in the preparation of all aspects of
accreditation, including the Self‑Study report, on‑site visit,
follow‑up and ongoing evaluation of the Emergency Medical Technology and
Fire Sciences Department; prepares and administers budget; participates in
community service projects; prepares class schedules for publication;
negotiates contracts with community health agencies and private industry and
seeks outside funding; coordinates scholarship awards; prepares reports
required by internal and external agencies and departments; initiates and
participates in articulation activities with secondary and higher educational
institutions; evaluates EMT and Fire Science faculty and staff; performs
related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: college curriculum and instructional programs;
occupational/vocational rules and regulations governing Emergency Medical
Technology/Fire Science programs; OSHA regulations.
Ability to: develop, implement and evaluate programs; advise
students; supervise, train and evaluate staff; manage budgets; communicate
effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships
with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree and certification in
EMT/Fire Science and paramedic certification by the Arizona Department of
Health Services with demonstrated training and administrative experience.
Special Conditions of Employment
Possession of Emergency Medical Technology certificate.
